HAVlife Martini Shake Off Fundraising to Support Johnson County Youth
HAVlife of Johnson County will hold its annual Martini Shake Off fundraising event on June 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Graduate in downtown Iowa City.
Since its inception in 2016, the Johnson County chapter has awarded more than $207,000 in grants, largely to youth ages 10 to 15, to help them pursue music, athletics, and arts activities.
“This event creates a wonderful mix of fun and fundraising,” said HAVlife Board Director Patty Grabinski. “People come together to enjoy martinis and craft cocktail samples from the finest restaurants in the area, delicious food, and live music. And they walk away knowing that their contributions will make a tangible difference in a child’s life.”
HAVlife Board Secretary Andrea Hicks agrees, saying the dollars go directly to youth via local non profits but are not allowed to be used for administrative costs. “It’s unique, said Hicks, who is also an Urban Acres real estate agent. “You can have a huge impact on local kids, and that feels good. The money we raise makes a difference in whether these kids are able to pursue their potential. It’s why Urban Acres and Carousel and so many others support this organization.”
HAVlife’s Impact on Local Youth
Dollars raised stay local, helping to buy bikes, jerseys, and cover entry fees for kids of Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County; opening the door to Broadway, music camps, and the purchase of instruments; sending members of the Fifth Ward Saints North mentoring program to summer camp; helping Iowa City eastside students build and install free book libraries; and helping southside students design art murals. In fall 2018, HAVlife also provided $10,000 in seed money to start Courage League Sports, a non-profit adaptive sports and recreation organization for youth with physical, cognitive, or emotional disabilities.
“Generous support from HAVlife enabled us to have a successful first year,” said Courage League Sports Iowa City Director Jenny Rempt.
HAVlife has impacted nearly 10,000 kids in Johnson County to date. The organization issues grants three times a year, allocating between $20,000 and $25,000 each time. This year’s HAVlife event features main sponsors Carousel Motors, Carousel Nissan, and Urban Acres Real Estate as well as generous donations from Grabinski Group, Johnson Brothers, University of Iowa Community Credit Union, Fran and Margaret McCaffery, and more.
